Building on the Rock: The Word Before the Gifts
July 16,2026
Matthew 7:24–27; Ephesians 2:20; 1 Corinthians 3:11; John 1:1–4; 2 Timothy 2:15; Colossians 2:6–7
Imagine a man who desperately needs a place to live, yet instead of building a house, he spends all his time installing electricity. He erects electric poles, strings wires, fixes bright bulbs, purchases a television and other appliances, but never lays a foundation or builds a home. What value is electricity without a house?
Sadly, this picture describes the condition of many believers today. Many pursue spiritual gifts, positions, and outward manifestations while neglecting the most important work of all—building their lives on Jesus Christ, the Chief Cornerstone.
Every building begins with a foundation. Block is laid upon block, but the entire structure depends on the cornerstone and the foundation beneath it. The Scripture declares that Jesus Christ is the Chief Cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20). He is also the Rock upon which every wise man builds (Matthew 7:24–25). Though He was rejected by men, He remains the only sure foundation for every believer (Matthew 21:42; 1 Corinthians 3:11).
Jesus is the Rock because He is the eternal Word of God. The Bible says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1). Therefore, to build on Christ is to build upon His Word.
One of the greatest problems in the Church today is not the absence of gifts but the absence of a solid biblical foundation. Many believers have not allowed the Word of God to shape, renew, and continually update their lives. Others may have started building, but they have neglected the maintenance of their spiritual house through consistent study, obedience, prayer, and fellowship with God.
The Word of God is your spiritual foundation. If your life is not firmly established upon it, you will become vulnerable to deception. When false teachings arise, when storms of temptation come, when trials, persecutions, and disappointments beat against your life, your faith will collapse because it is not rooted in Christ. Jesus warned that only the house built upon the Rock will stand when the rain falls, the floods come, and the winds blow (Matthew 7:24–27).
What is the profit of possessing spiritual gifts without a strong foundation in God's Word? What is the value of shining brightly like electric lights on poles when you have no house to dwell in? You may prophesy, preach, sing, or display remarkable gifts, yet remain spiritually unstable because your inner life has not been built upon Christ.
Today is a call to return to the foundation. Build your life daily through the study and obedience of God's Word. As Paul instructed Timothy, "Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15). Let your roots go deep into Christ so that no storm can shake your faith.
May the Lord open your eyes to the truth of His Word, establish you firmly upon Christ the Rock, and strengthen your spiritual house to stand faithfully until the end. Amen.
Reflection: Is your life built on the solid foundation of God's Word, or are you depending only on spiritual activities and gifts? Examine yourself today and begin building upon Christ, the only sure foundation.
