Living the Christian Life with Responsibility and Integrity
June 26, 2026
As I reflect on the state of contemporary Christianity, I am deeply concerned by the way many believers relate to one another, especially in the workplace and other professional settings. It is disheartening that people who share the same faith often struggle to build healthy, respectful, and trustworthy relationships. In some cases, the name of Christ is brought into disrepute because of irresponsible attitudes and poor work ethics displayed by those who profess to follow Him.
One common misconception is the belief that being a Christian exempts a person from accountability or correction. However, Scripture teaches the exact opposite. When Moses was overwhelmed with leadership responsibilities, his father-in-law advised him to appoint capable men who feared God, were trustworthy, and hated dishonest gain (Exodus 18:21). God values diligence, wisdom, integrity, and responsibility. These qualities are not worldly virtues; they are marks of godly character.
Laziness, carelessness, and a refusal to accept correction should never be mistaken for Christian conduct. The Scriptures repeatedly commend diligence and condemn idleness. "Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth" (Proverbs 10:4). Likewise, the Apostle Paul instructed believers that anyone unwilling to work should not expect to eat and warned against living irresponsibly (2 Thessalonians 3:10–12). A genuine believer should be known for faithfulness, excellence, and reliability.
I once witnessed a troubling situation where a Christian brother who identified himself as an evangelist became offended after receiving a workplace query. Instead of humbly accepting correction and improving his performance, he reacted in anger and resigned. Such conduct does not reflect the Spirit of Christ. As followers of Jesus, we are called to embrace humility, receive correction with grace, and maintain a good testimony before both believers and unbelievers.
The Christian life is governed by the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:2). This life is not merely about observing religious practices but about allowing the Holy Spirit to transform our character. A Spirit-filled believer demonstrates responsibility, humility, diligence, love, and integrity in every area of life. Our conduct should consistently reflect the One we represent.
May we strive to be Christians whose lives commend the gospel—not only in our words but also in our work, our relationships, and our daily responsibilities.
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men." — Colossians 3:23
