The Righteousness That Comes By Faith Alone

(Philippians 3:3–10; Romans 3:20–22; Galatians 2:15–21)

Paul, once a zealous Judaist committed to the traditions of the fathers, was a fierce persecutor of “the people of the Way” (Acts 9:1–2). He sought righteousness through strict adherence to the law, believing that human effort could secure acceptance before God. But after encountering the risen Christ, Paul came into a revolutionary understanding: righteousness is not a product of works, but a person — Jesus Christ.

Reflecting on his former life, Paul declared:

“Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee… concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.”
(Philippians 3:5–6)

He had climbed to the highest point of legalistic achievement. Yet, upon seeing Christ, Paul realized that everything he once treasured was empty compared to the true righteousness revealed through faith. Therefore he said:

“But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ… and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ — the righteousness which is from God by faith.”
(Philippians 3:7–9)

Paul draws a clear and eternal line between self-righteousness and Christ’s righteousness:

Self-righteousness is human effort trying to please God through rituals, traditions, or moral performance.

Christ’s righteousness is God’s gift, received only by faith, never earned (Romans 3:20–22; Galatians 2:16).

The gospel announces that we are justified, sanctified, and made acceptable before God solely through Christ (1 Corinthians 6:11). No personal achievements — no sacrifices, rituals, fastings, or religious acts — can add anything to what Jesus has finished. Before God, these works carry no saving value (Isaiah 64:6).

True rest is found only in Christ:

“Come to Me… and I will give you rest.”
(Matthew 11:28)

It is when we cease from striving and trust fully in His work on the cross that we experience the freedom and joy of grace.
