The Authority of the Scriptures

May 13,2026

The book of Acts chapter 2 gives us one of the greatest examples of a Spirit-filled sermon. From verse 14 onward, Apostle Peter stood before the multitude and preached with boldness and clarity. What is striking is that his message was not built on personal experiences, dreams, or visions, but on the authority of the Scriptures.

One would have expected Peter to speak about the extraordinary moments he had with Christ Jesus. He could have told the people about the day he walked on water, the experience on the Mount of Transfiguration, or how they found money in the mouth of a fish. He could even have spoken about the miraculous catch of fish when his nets almost broke. These experiences were powerful and undeniable. Yet, Peter chose a different foundation for his message.
Filled with the Holy Spirit, he declared:

“This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel…” — Acts 2:16

Peter anchored his sermon on what had already been written through the prophet Joel. He used the Scriptures to reveal the person of Christ and to explain the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that the people were witnessing. By the authority of the Word of God, over three thousand souls were added to the kingdom that very day.

This is a powerful lesson for every preacher and minister of the Gospel. The sheep need the Scriptures more than they need our personal stories. Experiences, dreams, visions, and testimonies may help illustrate the truth of God’s Word, but they must never replace the authority of the Scriptures. When personal experiences become the foundation, people can begin to assume that God works with everyone in exactly the same way.

But the Lord says:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.” — Isaiah 55:8

As ministers of God, we must seek to preach Christ through the Scriptures and not merely through human opinions, emotions, or experiences. The power to convict, transform, and save lives in the Word of God.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” — 2 Timothy 3:16

“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season…” — 2 Timothy 4:2

May the Lord help us to remain faithful to the ministry of the Scriptures and the testimony of Jesus Christ.
