The Good Shepherd DevotionalThe Power of the Written Word in Building and Preserving the Church
January 15,2026
From the earliest days of God’s dealings with His people, written communication has been a vital instrument for revealing His will, preserving truth, and guiding His people. One of the primary ways the early apostles communicated with the churches was through epistles—letters written to convey sound doctrine, shape godly character, correct errors, build up believers, and offer counsel and encouragement to the body of Christ.
Indeed, the final book of Scripture, Revelation, is itself an epistle addressed to seven churches, given by the Lord through His servant John (Revelation 1:11). Long before this, the pattern of divine writing began with Moses, who received the Ten Commandments written by the finger of God when he descended from Mount Sinai (Exodus 31:18; Deuteronomy 9:10). This reveals that writing has always been central to God’s method of instruction and covenantal communication.
The apostle Paul clearly stated one of the purposes of these inspired writings:
“These things write I unto thee… that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God” (1 Timothy 3:14–15).
Through epistles, believers were taught how to live, relate, and function within the household of faith. Although Paul was not physically present in Corinth, he was able, through his letters, to correct serious moral and doctrinal issues—such as the case of immorality where a man had his father’s wife (1 Corinthians 5:1–5). The written word carried apostolic authority and produced order, repentance, and restoration.
The culture of writing is eternal. Scripture reveals that books will be opened in judgment, and what is written will bear witness (Daniel 7:10; Revelation 20:12). This underscores the enduring power and responsibility of written words. God also places great value on the translation and publication of the gospel, desiring that His truth be made available in every language and to every people. When the gospel is written in the heart language of a people, it strengthens faith, establishes doctrine, and preserves truth across generations (Romans 10:17; Habakkuk 2:2).
Therefore, we pray that many will arise in this generation—even in this era of artificial intelligence—with fresh grace, wisdom, and innovation to spread the gospel. May the Lord raise writers, translators, publishers, and digital missionaries who will take the message of Christ to rural communities and the lost urban world, in Jesus’ name (Matthew 28:19–20; Isaiah 52:7).
