Stirring the Gifts Within: The Power and Purpose of Speaking in Tougues
January 20,2026
The initial deposit of the Holy Spirit is received the very day a believer is baptized in the Holy Ghost. This deposit is a gift from God, freely given. However, as children of God, we are instructed to stir up that gift, and one of the primary ways we do so is by speaking in tongues.
The Holy Spirit does not operate by suspending our senses, as some once believed. When you received the Holy Ghost, you were fully aware that something supernatural was happening—an utterance coming through your tongue. Interestingly, you can choose to stop speaking, even while you still sense the prompting to continue. This shows that the Spirit works with us, not instead of us.
Think of it this way: the Holy Spirit brings you to the tap, and the water begins to flow by His prompting. After that initial experience, He may simply remind or nudge you to speak again—but you must respond. From my personal experience, I continued speaking until I felt a release, and it became such a beautiful experience that I never wanted to go a day without it.
The Apostle Paul sheds light on the benefits of speaking in tongues. He teaches that:
He who speaks in an unknown tongue
1.edifies himself
2.He speaks mysteries
3.He speaks to God alone
After the initial deposit, speaking in tongues should become a continual practice, because it is a gift. Paul clearly instructed the Church, “Do not forbid speaking in tongues.” He also said, “I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than you all.” Yet, he explained that he would speak five words with understanding in a public setting so that others might receive direction and instruction.
Many believers unknowingly limit themselves by neglecting this gift. Scripture makes it clear that the gift of Christ you received is not only for you, but for the entire Body of Christ. It is given for mutual benefit and must be used accordingly. Beyond personal edification, speaking in tongues can serve as:
1.Intercession for others
2. Spiritual assistance for those facing challenges
3.Strength for personal spiritual battles
Unless a person suppresses it, has not received it initially, or has not yet received the Holy Ghost, this gift remains available. Therefore, speak the mysteries God has placed within you.
