Established by the Father in Christ, Appointed by the Son for Ministry

There is nowhere in Scripture where believers are instructed to work their way into being “in Christ.” What the Word reveals clearly is that becoming a believer involves a response of faith, but being placed in Christ is an act of God the Father.

To become a believer, Scripture teaches that we must confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead (Romans 10:9–10). This confession grants us access, but it is the Father Himself who establishes us in Christ. As the apostle Paul declares, “But of Him you are in Christ Jesus” (1 Corinthians 1:30). Our faith responds to God’s call, but our position in Christ is entirely the Father’s gracious work.

For any person to be in Christ and thus become a new creation, where old things pass away and all things become new (2 Corinthians 5:17), it is the Father who permits and performs this divine placement. Jesus Christ provided the blood—His finished work on the cross—through which peace was made between God and humanity. “Having made peace through the blood of His cross” (Colossians 1:20). Through Christ, hostility was removed and reconciliation accomplished, so that God now stands for man and not against him (Romans 5:1; Ephesians 2:14–16). On this basis, the Father places us in Christ.

Once a believer is found in Christ, the next divine order unfolds: Christ places the believer into service. Ministry does not precede identity; identity in Christ precedes ministry. One must first be established in Him before being entrusted by Him. Paul testified to this order when he said, “And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry” (1 Timothy 1:12).

The Father owns the vineyard, the Son oversees the work, and we are privileged laborers within it (Matthew 20:1; 1 Corinthians 3:9). It is the Son who assigns us our place in the garden. He is also the One who intercedes for fruitless trees, saying, “Let it alone this year also, till I dig around it and fertilize it” (Luke 13:8), even when judgment seems imminent. This reveals Christ’s patience, mercy, and commitment to fruitfulness in the Father’s vineyard.

Therefore, when Christ commands, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel” (Mark 16:15), He does so as the One who has already positioned us in Himself and now commissions us for service. The Father qualifies us for life in Christ, and Christ qualifies us for ministry through Christ. The Father gives us the Son, and the Son, in turn, places us into ministry as co-laborers in God’s work of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18–20).

May you continually remain in the will of the Father, which is to be in Christ (Ephesians 1:4), and also walk faithfully in the will of Christ, which is His ongoing ministry of reconciliation until the end of the age (Matthew 28:19–20).
