Beyond Knowledge: Growing Into the Love of Christ That Transforms
December 5,2025
There is a divine focus and spiritual domain that Christ desires every believer to attain, and this journey begins with knowledge. Scripture affirms this in Philippians 1:9:
“And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment.”
However, there is a higher peak of spiritual growth—one that surpasses mere knowledge. This is the point where we know the love of Christ that passes knowledge. As revealed in Ephesians 3:18–19,
“That you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height—to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
This truth teaches us that knowledge, no matter how vast, is incomplete without the love of Christ. Knowledge alone can inform us, but only the love of Christ can transform us.
The love of Christ reshapes our perspective, even toward those the world labels as enemies. When the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts (Romans 5:5), it restrains us from destruction and empowers us to respond in grace, mercy, and wisdom.
Why Must We Graduate From Knowledge to the Love of Christ?
1. Human nature is weak.
Without the love of Christ governing us, our fallen nature can easily undo what grace has built. Scripture warns us in 1 Corinthians 8:1:
“Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.”
2. The love of Christ becomes our inner tutor.
In difficult and unpalatable situations, Christ’s love guides our response, constantly asking us, “What would Jesus do?” (John 13:34–35).
3. The love of Christ helps us see beyond the present.
It reminds us that Paul, once a chief persecutor and accomplice in Stephen’s death (Acts 7:58; 8:1), later became a mighty apostle of the very gospel he opposed (Acts 9:1–20). Love sees potential where others see only history.
4. The love of Christ enables eternal vision.
Through His love, we begin to view people from God’s eternal purpose—chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4), not merely by their present flaws.
This is why the love of Christ passes knowledge. Knowledge alone can lead to pride, but love births humility and keeps us submitted under the authority of Christ. It teaches us calmness under pressure, grace under accusation, and Christlikeness even when we are misunderstood or wronged (1 Peter 2:21–23).
May the Lord grant us deeper understanding and experiential knowledge of His love, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
