Encouraged in the Lord: Rising Above Discouragement
December 6,2025
Key Scriptures: 1 Samuel 30:6; Romans 12:21; Matthew 5:44–45; Joshua 1:9
One of the quiet struggles many believers face is trying their best to walk with God while receiving little or no encouragement from others. At times, it can even feel as though some individuals have positioned themselves as discouragers within the body of Christ—those who constantly criticize, wound, or speak negatively into the efforts of others.
Yet, no matter how painful their actions may be, the believer who knows the truth must not repay evil with evil. Scripture instructs us clearly:
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” — Romans 12:21
“…that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good.” — Matthew 5:45
To walk in the nature of our Father, we respond to hurt with grace, to negativity with love, and to hostility with goodness.
David: A Model of Endurance and Encouragement in the Lord
David’s life is a powerful example of one who faced discouragement, even from those closest to him. As a young man, he was entrusted with caring for the sheep—often alone. Though servants were available, Scripture shows David personally confronted lions and bears (1 Samuel 17:34–36). It’s possible those servants took advantage of David’s sense of responsibility, knowing he would cover for them.
Yet David remained focused. He did not allow neglect, loneliness, or danger to hinder his sense of duty or his faithfulness.
A more intense moment came at Ziklag. When David and his men returned to find their families taken captive, grief overwhelmed them all. The same men who once trusted him suddenly turned against him:
“…the people spoke of stoning him… but David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.” — 1 Samuel 30:6
Notice this: David did not encourage himself in himself. He encouraged himself in the Lord. Human strength is limited. Self-confidence fails. People who once supported you may fail you. But the Lord remains our unfailing source of courage, comfort, and clarity.
Be Strong and Courageous
Just as God told Joshua:
“Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9
Your strength is not in the applause of people. Your courage is not dependent on human validation. Your comfort is not anchored in earthly support.
Your help is in the Lord.
I decree that you rise again, strengthened and encouraged in the Holy Spirit.
May every weight of discouragement fall off you, and may you continue your race without hindrance, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
