Two Kinds of Ministers: The Leaven of Ceremony vs. the Way of Servant Leadership
November 17,2025
(Matthew 16:6; Matthew 23:5–12; John 13:3–15)
Jesus warned His disciples, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees” (Matthew 16:6).
Their leaven was not physical bread, but the attitude of pride—seeking recognition, positions of honour, and public greetings (Matthew 23:5–7). In contrast, Jesus demonstrated the model of true ministry by stooping down to wash the feet of His disciples (John 13:3–15).
In this teaching, we consider the two types of ministers the Lord exposed through His words and actions: Ceremonial Ministers and Servant-Leader Ministers.
1. Ceremonial Ministers
(Matthew 23:1–7)
These are ministers who love appearance but lack substance. Jesus described them as those who “say, and do not do” (Matthew 23:3). Their focus is on being seen, heard, and celebrated.
Characteristics of Ceremonial Ministers:
They boast about their experiences, achievements, and spiritual exploits.
They speak of power but do not point men to Christ, the Source of all power.
Their messages often exalt themselves: “When I lay hands on you… when you come to me…”
They avoid real places of service where broken people need help.
When true problems arise, they become confused because they rely on ceremony, not Christ.
Their “leaven” spreads—producing pride, dependence on men, and spiritual emptiness.
Jesus said plainly: Beware of this kind of ministry (Matthew 16:6).
2. Servant-Leader Ministers
(John 13:14–15; Mark 10:42–45)
Servant-leaders follow Christ’s pattern. Jesus said, “I am among you as one who serves” (Luke 22:27). They do not pursue visibility but obedience.
Characteristics of Servant-Leaders:
They serve seeing by Christ, not to be seen by men (Matthew 6:1–4).
They go only where the Lord sends them and stay where He places them.
They are accessible to the flock, ready to respond and to support in times of need.
Their focus is on making disciples, not gathering fans or building personal empires (Matthew 28:19–20).
They labour for the transformation of lives, not the enlargement of reputation.
They reproduce servants, not followers of themselves.
This is the example Jesus gave when He washed the disciples’ feet and said:
“I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.” (John 13:15)
A Call to Self-Examination
May the Lord open our eyes to identify the leaven within us, cut off excesses, and realign our hearts to His will.
May we become true servant-leaders who reflect Christ in humility, service, and love.
God bless you.
