Understanding Why Jesus Did Not Commit Himself to All Men
John 2:23–25 • John 6:26–27 • 1 Samuel 13:14 • Romans 7:17–20
Scripture shows us something profound about Jesus’ relationship with people.
At the Feast of the Passover, many believed in His name because of the miracles He performed (John 2:23). They followed Him, admired Him, and even sought Him out. Yet the Bible says:
“But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men…”
(John 2:24–25)
Their belief was shallow—rooted in excitement, needs, and curiosity, not surrender. Jesus saw beyond their words and actions; He saw the heart.
Later, another crowd searched for Him, crossed the sea to find Him, and when they finally located Him, Jesus exposed their motive:
“You seek Me… because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
Labour not for the food which perishes…”
(John 6:26–27)
Their desire was not for the Bread of Life but for earthly benefits.
The Obstruction Within Man
Jesus knew what was in man—an inner condition that resisted God.
Paul called it:
“Sin that dwells in me.”
(Romans 7:17–20)
This nature makes a person attend gatherings but remain unchanged…
• hearing sermons while holding on to grudges,
• attending conferences while refusing forgiveness,
• loving spiritual activities but resisting spiritual transformation.
This inner obstruction keeps many from being people God can commit Himself to.
The Heart God Is Looking For
God once said of David:
“I have found a man after My own heart.”
(1 Samuel 13:14)
Not because David was perfect, but because he was yielded.
Jesus will never cast away anyone who comes (John 6:37), yet the depth of His commitment to a person is often tied to that person’s surrender to the Father’s will.
So the question becomes:
Are you someone the Lord can trust with His assignments?
Are you the vessel He can send to the nations, or should He look for another?
