Three Categories of Divine Messengers
October 31,2025
“Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes...” — Matthew 23:34 (NKJV)
Throughout Scripture and in every generation, God has always sent His representatives to carry out His divine purpose on earth. In Matthew 23:34, Jesus Himself identified three categories of people sent by the Lord: Prophets, Wise Men, and Scribes. Each plays a distinct role in God’s kingdom, and every believer should understand where they fit in this divine order.
1. The Prophets — The Mouthpiece of God
The first category mentioned by the Lord is the prophets. These are God’s direct messengers, His spokesmen on earth. They are often recognized as the fivefold ministers mentioned in Ephesians 4:11–12 — “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry.”
Prophets, apostles, evangelists, pastors, and teachers are easily seen in our church settings. They stand in visible positions, speaking on behalf of God and guiding His people. Jesus said, “I send them to you,” because a prophet’s primary function is to speak for God (Jeremiah 1:7, Amos 3:7).
2. The Wise Men — The Hidden Voices of Wisdom
Next, the Lord said, “I send you wise men.” These are often not found on pulpits or wearing ministerial regalia, yet they are anointed with divine wisdom and understanding of times and seasons, just like the sons of Issachar in 1 Chronicles 12:32 — “who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do.”
Wise men may work quietly in various sectors — business, education, governance, or media — yet they influence nations with the wisdom of God. Some are creative evangelists, strategists, or counselors who carry out divine assignments without titles.
Even today, there are those like the young evangelistic minds who use media, technology, or simple acts of service to advance the gospel without recognition — these are God’s wise men. Remember, Jesus said there were five wise virgins (Matthew 25:1–4), symbolic of those who kept their lamps burning with discernment and readiness.
3. The Scribes — The Keepers and Interpreters of Truth
The third category Jesus mentioned is the scribes — those who preserve and teach the truth of God’s Word. The Greek word “grammateus” (from which we get “grammar”) refers to one skilled in writing, documentation, and the accurate interpretation of the Scriptures.
Scribes in the kingdom today are those who rightly divide the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). They could be writers, teachers, scholars, or digital content creators — people who explain and spread the knowledge of Christ accurately and faithfully.
Stay in Your Calling
Beloved, wherever you are — in the church, business world, academic field, or media space — remember: you are sent. Ministry is not limited to standing behind a pulpit. You may be among the wise men influencing culture or among the scribes documenting divine truth for future generations.
Whatever your category, stay put in your calling. Don’t abandon your divine assignment for another man’s position. As Paul admonished, “Let each one remain in the same calling in which he was called.” — 1 Corinthians 7:20
A day of accountability will come when the Lord will require of every steward what they did with what was entrusted to them (Romans 14:12).
May you never miss the voice of the Lord, and may His grace empower you to remain faithful in your place of calling.
