The Power of Submitting to the Father's Will
Scripture Reading: “He said, ‘I am He.’ And when He said to them, ‘I am He,’ they drew back and fell to the ground.” — John 18:6 (NKJV)
Heaven is not merely searching for those who can demonstrate spiritual power, but for those who can restrain themselves from misusing that power when faced with provocation or embarrassment. True maturity in the Spirit is revealed not only by what you can do but by what you choose not to do when it is within your ability.
When our Lord Jesus was about to be arrested, the scripture records in John 18:6 that as soon as He identified Himself—“I am He”—those who came to arrest Him fell backward to the ground. This shows clearly that the power of the Holy Spirit was with Him, even in His moment of persecution. Yet, though He had the authority and liberty to call off the plan of redemption, Jesus chose submission over power.
Earlier in His ministry, the Jews often sought to kill Him or throw Him off a cliff, but each time, by divine wisdom, He escaped unharmed because His hour had not yet come (Luke 4:29–30, John 7:30). However, at the appointed time, when the will of the Father required Him to lay down His life, He willingly submitted. Even when Peter struck the servant’s ear, Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?” (Matthew 26:53).
This teaches us a vital truth: following the will of the Father is the greatest demonstration of power.
Jesus was not driven by the desire to prove Himself; He was moved by His desire to please the Father. His strength was found in obedience, not in display.
He maintained this posture of obedience through constant communion with the Father. The scriptures tell us that “Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed” (Luke 5:16). These moments of prayer were not just for requests but for alignment—to understand the Father’s heart and will. That is why He could confidently declare, “I and My Father are one” (John 10:30).
So, beloved, do you know the will of the Father for your life?
Do not seek power for its own sake; seek His will, and true power will follow. When you walk in the will of God, even life’s greatest challenges will bow before you in due time.
