Modern-Day Pharisees: The Neglect of Justice, Mercy, and Faith

October 9,2025

Text: Matthew 23:23 (KJV)

“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.”

The Lord Jesus confronted the religious leaders of His day—the Pharisees and the scribes—not because they tithed, but because they had lost sight of the heart of God. Their focus was on external obedience while neglecting the deeper, weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith.

A Question for Our Generation

Are there modern-day Pharisees and scribes among today’s Christians?
When we observe how religion has become more about appearance, money, and recognition than righteousness, compassion, and truth, the answer becomes clear.

The Pharisees were meticulous in tithing even the smallest herbs—mint, anise, and cummin—yet their hearts were cold toward God and man. In the same way, many today are careful about offerings and church duties but have forgotten love, fairness, and faithfulness.

The Spirit of Mammon

In Jesus’ time, the temple had become a place of trade. Money changers dominated the system, and spiritual leaders profited from rituals rather than guiding people to God (Matthew 21:12–13).
Likewise, today’s religious systems often place more emphasis on material giving than on spiritual growth. People are taught to give, yet justice is trampled, the poor are ignored, and truth is compromised.

The Missing Weightier Matters

Justice – The fairness and righteousness that reflect God’s character (Micah 6:8).

Mercy – Compassion toward others, especially the weak and needy (Matthew 9:13).

Faith – A steadfast trust in God, not in systems or wealth (Luke 18:8).

Jesus did not condemn tithing; He simply showed that it is meaningless without a heart aligned with God’s principles. What good is giving when love is absent, or worship when faith is gone?

A Sobering Reflection

When the Son of Man returns, will He find faith on the earth? (Luke 18:8).
This question is as urgent now as it was then. Have we replaced true faith with religious activity? Have we exchanged mercy for self-promotion and justice for convenience?

Let us return to the core of the gospel—a life of justice, mercy, and faith—for these are the true marks of those who walk with God.
