Keeping the Lamp Burning: Lessons from the Ten Virgins

Text: Matthew 25:1–13

The parable of the ten virgins is one of the most instructive teachings of Jesus about spiritual readiness. It is not a mere story—it is a call to constant vigilance and preparedness for the coming of the Bridegroom, our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus told of ten virgins who went out to meet the bridegroom. Five were wise, and five were foolish. The difference between them was not in their appearance or association but in their preparation. Let us look closely at the key symbols in this parable and what they represent in our lives today.

1. The Lamp — The Spirit of Man

“The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.” — Proverbs 20:27

The lamp represents the human spirit, which God uses as His light source within us. When a person surrenders their life to Christ, a transformation occurs — the individual receives a new spirit.

“That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” — John 3:6

This new spirit becomes the vessel through which God communicates and operates. It is your inner lamp, meant to shine with divine illumination. Without a living spirit, a person walks in darkness, no matter how religious they appear.

2. The Oil — The Holy Spirit

Oil throughout Scripture represents the anointing and presence of the Holy Spirit. The wise virgins carried extra oil — they had an abiding fellowship with the Spirit of God.

“But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.” — 1 John 2:20

The foolish virgins neglected this vital relationship. Their lamps (spirits) were present, but they lacked the sustaining oil (the Holy Spirit). Without continual fellowship with the Spirit through prayer, obedience, and the Word, the flame will eventually go out.

3. The Fire or Light — The Word and Life of Christ

“In Him was life; and the life was the light of men.” — John 1:4
“That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” — John 1:9

Jesus is the Light that burns upon the lamp of our spirit. The Word of God fuels this light. When Christ lives in you through His Word, your life radiates His truth and power.
A believer whose lamp burns brightly is one whose spirit is alive, fed by the Word, and sustained by the Holy Spirit.

4. The Vessel — Your Life

The vessel that holds the oil is your life—your character, your conduct, your choices. You cannot contain the anointing if your vessel is impure or cracked. The wise ensure their vessel is ready to receive and retain the flow of God’s presence.

“If a man therefore purges himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use.” — 2 Timothy 2:21

A Call to Readiness

The parable ends with a sobering warning:

“Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.” — Matthew 25:13

The wise keep their lamps trimmed, their oil full, and their light shining. The foolish delay preparation until it is too late.

May your spirit remain alive, your oil never run dry, and your light continue to shine brightly until the day of His appearing.
