Understanding the Call: Disciple or Apostle?

Understanding the Call: Disciple or Apostle?

May 2,2024

Matthew 4:19: "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people."
- Acts 13:2-3: "While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.' So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off."
- Ephesians 4:11-12: "So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up."

In the kingdom of God, there are two distinct calls: to become a disciple and to be sent. The call to discipleship is a call to follow Jesus, to learn from Him, and to grow in faith. On the other hand, the call to apostleship or missionary work is a call to be sent out into the world to spread the gospel and make disciples of all nations.

The Difference Between Disciples and Apostles
Disciples are called from the world to the Lord, while apostles are sent to the world by the Lord. As disciples, we are called to utilize the gifts of the Spirit in the measure of grace given to us, serving the body of Christ locally. Apostles, on the other hand, are sent ones, commissioned to take the gospel to the world.

Staying in Our Lane
It's essential to recognize that our role in the body of Christ is not defined by a title, but by the work we do. As disciples, we are called to be faithful in our local assemblies, serving and blessing others. If the Lord calls us to be apostles or missionaries, we should respond with obedience and dedication.

A Call to Faithfulness
Whether we are disciples or apostles, the Lord is looking for men and women who are faithful and obedient to His call. Let's focus on serving the Lord with humility and dedication, allowing Him to guide us in our journey.
