Grace and Obedience
Under the New Covenant, grace empowers us to live obedient lives, including activities like fasting, giving, and other disciplines that honor God.
Tithing in the Old and New Covenants
- Abraham's Tithe: Abraham paid tithe to Melchizedek, a priest-king, before the Law (Genesis 14:18-20). This act demonstrated Abraham's respect and gratitude.
- Levitical Priesthood: Under the Law, the Levites received tithes from their fellow Israelites (Numbers 18:21-24). This system was established to support the Levitical priesthood.
- Jesus, Our High Priest: The priesthood of Jesus is distinct from the Levitical order. Jesus is a priest "after the order of Melchizedek" (Psalm 110:4, Hebrews 5:6), with a priesthood sealed by an oath.
Fasting in the Bible
Fasting is a spiritual discipline that helps us focus on God, seek His guidance, and demonstrate our dependence on Him. Jesus taught about fasting in Matthew 6:16-18, emphasizing humility and sincerity.
Giving Under Grace
When we give, including our tithes, we do so under the New Covenant of grace. This means:
- Grace Empowers Giving: Grace enables us to give freely and joyfully, without being bound by strict laws or regulations.
- *Christ, Our High Priest*: When we pray about our giving, we can approach Christ, our High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of God (Hebrews 7:25).
Living Under God's Will
As believers, we are called to live under God's will, which includes:
- Fasting and Prayer: Seeking God's guidance and strength through fasting and prayer.
- Giving and Generosity: Giving freely and joyfully, trusting in God's provision.
- Obedience and Surrender: Surrendering our lives to God's will, obeying His commands, and living according to His Word.
Conclusion
Grace does not cancel our responsibility to obey God; rather, it enables us to live obedient lives, empowered by His Spirit. As we fast, give, and live under God's will, let's remember that grace fans our obedience, making it easy and joyful.
